WordPress 3.3 Update – Sonny Review
Last week WordPress made a major update to their CMS (content management system) and here is a brief run down of some of the things you should know before you upgrade.
WordPress 3.3 is named “Sonny” in honor of the great jazz saxophonist Sonny Stitt.
WordPress 3.3 is more of an aesthetic makeover of their software and now included fly-out menus and drop in media uploading.
If you are using plug-ins in your WordPress install I would suggest holding off on upgrading for a week or two until the third party developers have had a chance to update their plug-ins.
Before you do update, make a backup of your site and most importantly the database. There are several good automated back-up plug-ins that will do this for you and even e-mail your backups to you.
Update your plug-ins first then WordPress.
Be sure that the plug-ins that you’re using are from respected third party developers as many security exploits are done through hacked plug-ins.
Summary:
- Wait a week or two
- Backup your database and site
- Check the security of your Plug-ins
- Update your plug-ins
- Update WordPress

Now you tell me Roy,
LOL, ~ I updated a couple of sites the day after the 3.3 up-date and wow! First I’m glad i use an auto database backup system on my WordPress blogs, backup is totally necessary for this update.
If you don’t update in the correct order the site seems to get in a loop with the DB update and you don’t get back into the admin panel.
I seemed to get it all to work if I updated in this order.
1) update wordpress to 3.3
2) update the themes.
3) Update the plugins.
If you get in a loop at any point delete all cookies and caches, then try to get back in.
One better before updating anything change your theme back to the default theme temporarily this seems to work best.
Hope this helps some, I have found at this point all the important plugins have been updated.
Have an awesome holiday!
Thanks Brad…
